What is a Podiatrist?

A podiatrist is an individual who takes advanced medical training to work exclusively with conditions regarding feet and ankles, such as in the case of a fracture. They perform surgical procedures expertly, treat foot conditions, prescribe medication, and order tests and imaging. These medical professionals often work with you and your other doctors to keep you healthy.

What Can Podiatrists Do for Ankle and Foot Fractures?

You may get referred to a podiatrist after a trip to your family doctor or the emergency room for your foot issues. Your doctors at Idaho Foot & Ankle Surgeon Associates in Boise, Nampa & Meridian, ID, will review your X-rays if any have been taken; if not, they may order X-rays and do a general exam of your feet.

The bones of your feet include toes, sesamoid bones (in the big toe), metatarsal bones (center of the foot), and ankle bones. There are several different things your podiatrist can do depending on where your fracture is.

  • Non-displaced fractures are fractures in which the bone is still in place but cracked. Broken toes are a perfect example of this. This type of fracture does not need surgery, but a doctor needs to stabilize the area so that it can heal on its own. The podiatrist may splint and tape your toes or put you in a boot (a unique padded or air-adjusted walking device).
  • Displaced Fractures - Just as the name suggests, these fractures will not heal without some help from your podiatrist. The doctor aligns the bone and may use pins or screws to hold the healing bone in place. Sometimes, the doctor can do a bone graft or tissue reconstruction if the break is severe.
  • Non-Union Fractures - If a person does not seek medical care or has an improper casting situation, a non-union fracture can occur, in which there is no healing or delayed bone healing. The surgeon may choose to use a bone graft to promote healing.

Follow up with your podiatrist during your treatment for any of these breaks is critical for optimal health.
