Flat Feet (Fallen Arches): Symptoms, Causes & Treatments

People with flat feet do not have a visible arch when they stand - hence the nickname fallen arches. When you are born, you have flat feet that develop arches as you mature in childhood. If these arches fail to develop or disappear as you age, flat feet can lead to significant pain and trouble walking. Having flat feet may be tied to genetics, with known medical issues like cerebral palsy and down syndrome known to increase your risk of having it. Additionally, broken bones, chronic ankle or foot injuries, obesity, and arthritis may contribute to developing flat feet later in life. At Idaho Foot & Ankle Associates in Boise, Nampa/Caldwell, and Meridian, ID, our talented team of physicians are ready to diagnose and treat any foot-related ailments.

Symptoms of Flat Feet

If you lack arches to your feet, then this is a telltale sign that you are suffering from flat feet. if you are unsure if your arches are collapsing or flat, then pay attention to any changes in the appearance of your foot along with pain when weight bearing and fatigue along the side of your feet can be signs of fallen arches. Flat feet can cause a myriad of issues, including:

  • Bunions
  • Arthritis
  • Shin splints
  • Abnormal walking
  • Knee, hip, lower back, heel, foot, ankle, and leg pain
  • Inflammation of the foot

Causes of Flat Feet

Flat feet are not atypical in infants and toddlers because the arch of their feet is still developing. Many children develop flexible flatfeet, which is when the arch can be seen while the child is sitting, but not when standing. As children develop, many are able to outgrow flexible flat feet. Additionally, in older adults, flat feet can develop after an injury or when the tendon that supports the ankle tears or weakens significantly.

Treatments for Flat Feet

Treatment for flat feet depends on the severity of the injury and the age of the patient. For children, a combination of physical therapy and specially designed insoles can aid in the development of the foot's arch while older adults may require additional treatment including stretching and potentially surgery.
