A bunion is what we call it when the bottom big toe joint is out of place and causes a bony protrusion. It can stem from genetics, arthritis, or wearing poorly fitted shoes or high heels frequently. Idaho Foot & Ankle Associates, serving Boise, Nampa, and Meridian, ID, has skilled podiatrists, Dr. Ryan Kemp, Dr. Boyd Andrews, and Dr. Kerry Anderson, to assist you. But why should you visit us?
Unfortunately, bunions won't go away on their own. As they progress, even if they're not causing pain now, they may eventually. They can also lead to other issues, such as interfering with your ability to walk. At a certain point, they may require surgery to remove. Early on, however, it may be possible to prevent them from worsening with customized orthotics and changes in footwear.
If you're currently in pain, you don't have to suffer. At our practice, serving Boise, Nampa, and Meridian, ID, and the neighboring communities, we can provide pain relief in the form of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. We may also inject corticosteroids if a bunion’s development is aggravating a bursa or other parts of the foot.
Calluses and corns are hardened skin lesions resulting from pressure being placed on a part of your foot. In this case, the bunion will cause the skin on your foot to press against the side of your shoe, and a lesion may form on the bunion. If a corn or callus is painful or otherwise causing a problem, we can safely remove it.
If the pain is extremely bad, it may prevent you from going about your normal activities. Even if this doesn’t happen every day, it may happen unexpectedly. And if you need surgery, that's definitely time off of your feet. By getting treatment early, you can prevent this.
Idaho Foot & Ankle Associates, serving Boise, Nampa, and Meridian, ID, can help with a bunion. You'll see Dr. Kemp, Dr. Andrews, or Dr. Anderson who can find the right treatment approach.
